Baby Keem: The Bio

Hykeem grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, but he relocated as a teen because he felt dissatisfied with the music scene. He once asked an interviewer, “Do you know any artists from Vegas?”

How Keem Got Started

  • Keem has shared in interviews that he was primarily raised by his grandmother after the age of eight. Baby Keem’s songs sometimes include references to his grandma in his lyrics, particularly the track “Moshpit.” Hykeem’s grandmother bought him his first microphone and has constantly encouraged him to continue pursuing music.
  • Regarding his childhood, Hykeem has said, “My whole life was just music. I knew I was going to rap, but I never knew when. I never knew when I would have the voice. So I waited until I had the voice, when I was like 15. Because at the time, I used to think a deep voice was cool. I waited until my voice got deep enough, then I started rapping.”
  • Keem started writing his own songs when he was young, but he kept them to himself for a long time. When he was a freshman in high school, he produced his first song after spending months rapping over beats from YouTube.
  • After sharing the track he produced with his peers, they were surprised – Hykeem was primarily known as an athletic kid who was mainly interested in basketball.

Finding His Sound

  • Keem had to find his style as he grew, switching up his voice and flow as he got older. “I used to rap low,” he said to Complex Magazine. ''Now I use my high voice. I used to whisper-rap, so it was crazy. It sounds like you’re in the bedroom and you don’t want to wake nobody up, because that’s what it was. I just wanted to hear myself on the mic.”
  • Hykeem was inspired to embrace his higher voice by rappers like Lil Wayne, Chief Keef, and Young Thug.
  • Baby Keem includes humorous elements in his lyrics on a regular basis. “I’m a funny person,” he told Complex, “So it just rubs off. On top of that, it’s just relatable. Anybody can relate to some of the shit I’m saying.”

Not Your Average Rapper

Hykeem is known for his unique brand of hip-hop, with a sound that steers clear of traditional trap tropes to bring the listener something fresh and new. His flow has been described as melodic, and he frequently touches on darker, heavier themes in his lyrics. Subject matter included in his tracks ranges from heartbreak to emotional struggles and even depression.  Baby Keem produces the majority of his tracks himself, and he frequently makes production decisions that other rappers might never opt for. His beats are often ambient and atmospheric, with his drums sounding like a more distorted version of traditional trap fare. As both a rapper and producer, he’s gained notoriety for his blend of unique production elements and his signature flow. Keem once told Complex Magazine that one of his biggest inspirations is Kid Cudi. He’s quoted as saying, “I was inspired by Cudi’s Cadences and shit like that. Kid Cudi’s one of my favorite artists.” He’s also shared that Kanye West is a favorite artist of his, and a big dream is coming true for Keem in 2021 – he’ll be featured on Kanye’s upcoming album Donda.
