How Did Blackbear Get Famous?

While living in Florida and attending high school, Matthew Musto was a member of several bands before kicking off his solo music career. He was the lead singer of the rock group Polaroid for several years, working on their sole album, Paint the Town, and only EP, Inside and Out. However, it wasn't until 2008 that Matthew moved from Florida to Atlanta. Once he'd relocated to Atlanta, Matthew started working on music as Blackbear. He released an EP a year between 2008 and 2010, and these projects include Brightness, Contrast, and Exposure Some of Blackbear's earliest high-profile work in the music industry was as a co-writer for other artists throughout the 2010s. The fledgling solo artist was active as a songwriter before he scored his first hit for himself, working alongside fellow musician and writer Mike Posner. He's credited as one of the writers of Justin Bieber's smash hit "Boyfriend," alongside frequent collaborator Mike Posner.

Blackbear's First Album

Following releases like his 2014 Afterglow EP, which landed him a spot on Billboard’s uncharted listing of releases, Blackbear continued gaining traction in the music industry. He already had collaborations under his belt with Maejor Ali, James Blake, MGK, and more, and he was starting to get recognition as one of the hottest upcoming artists of the decade.  On Valentine's Day 2015, Blackbear released his first full-length solo album, an LP called Deadroses. The project yielded the single "idfc," which became Musto's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100, which was a big stride for his career. Just a few months later, Blackbear released a second record, Help, on November 27, 2015.

Blackbear in the Late 2010s

In April of the next year, Blackbear returned with an EP called Drink Bleach, which features the likes of Mike Posner and P-Lo. Midway through 2016, he released singles in collaboration with Linkin Park, Phoebe Ryan, and even Musical.ly star Jacob Sartorius.  One of the artist's biggest hits of the 2010s was his Cashmere Noose EP, which dropped on August 2, 2016. That project had just one producer: Blackbear himself, and it was released through his personal label, Bear Trap Records. The album was initially exclusively released on Soundcloud, but its fully-distributed version made it to the top of the iTunes R&B charts after it was released.

Mansionz

In 2016, Mike Posner and Blackbear joined forces once again to form Mansionz. The duo continues to work out of Los Angeles, and they've released collaborations with the likes of G-Eazy, Soren Bryce, and even NBA star Dennis Rodman.

Signed to Interscope Records

Blackbear's third studio album, Digital Druglord, was released on April 21, 2017. Featuring production work from Andrew Goldstein, Jeremy Zucker, Neenyo, and more, as well as Blackbear himself, the record features Gucci Mane, Juicy J, 24hrs, and more.  The record was a commercial success, earning a Gold certification from the RIAA. In response, Interscope Records offered Blackbear a multi-million dollar distribution deal. After signing to Interscope, Blackbear's next project was Cybersex, a mixtape released on November 27, 2017. The project features the singles "Up in This" and "Playboy Shit," along with collaborations with 2 Chainz, Cam'ron, Lil Aaron, Machine Gun Kelly, T-Pain, Ne-Yo, and more.

Anonymous and Everything Means Nothing

Blackbear's fourth studio album, Anonymous, was released on April 26, 2019. The record was followed by Everything Means Nothing, Blackbear's fifth record – and his most commercially successful.  Everything Means Nothing features collaborations with Lauv and Trevor Daniel, as well as production from Marshmello. The biggest hit on the album was "Hot Girl Bummer," a track that went triple-Platinum in the US and topped charts around the world.

Recent Work

Blackbear started teasing his next EP, Misery Lake, in early 2021 with the single "Jealousy," which features Mike Posner. Not long after, he dropped "U Love U," a collaboration with Tate McRae that would later be featured on Misery Lake. The EP was originally set to release earlier, but it ended up being delayed to August 13, 2021, after Blackbear signed on with Columbia Records.

Blackbear’s Personal Life

Musto is a survivor of chronic pancreatitis, which he developed due to heavy drinking. The musician got sober around the time of the release of Digital Druglord A few years after his diagnosis, the American hip-hop artist and his girlfriend, Michelle Maturo, had their son, Midnight Thomas Musto, in January of 2020.
