Gunna: The Bio

Sergio Kitchens is the youngest of five brothers. Raised by a single mother, he grew up listening to the likes of Chingy, Outkast, Cam’ron, and more. He started rapping when he was just 15 years old, attending high school at Langston Hughes High School in Georgia at the time. His first mixtape, Hard Body, was released under the alias Yung Gunna in 2013. Gunna eventually dropped the “Yung” and opted for a shorted moniker instead. In the 2010s, Gunna was introduced to Young Thug, one of the biggest names in hip-hop, by a mutual friend. Young Thug recruited Gunna to do a verse on his mixtape Jeffry, and Gunna ended up on the song “Floyd Mayweather '' with fellow rappers Travis Scott and Gucci Mane.

Gunna’s Music: Early Releases

In 2016, Gunna put out his first mixtape since 2013, Drip Season. The tracks included multiple high-profile rappers as features, including Young Thug, Lil Duke, Nechie, and others. He followed this mixtape with Drip Season 2, which included guest appearances from the rappers Offset, Playboi Carti, and, once again, Young Thug.  Drip or Drown, Gunna’s first EP, came shortly after in 2017. The EP was produced by Wheezy, one of Gunna’s closest friends. All of the verses on Drip or Drown are provided by Gunna except for one – from Young Thug. Drip Season 3, Gunna’s third mixtape in his Drip Season Series, was released on February 2, 2018, via YSL. The mixtape features production work by Metro Boomin, Beat Dilla, Doughboy, DY, Kacey Khalilel, London on da Track, Nav, Richie Souf, Turbo, and Wheezy. Guest appearances include Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Baby, Young Thug, and Young Jordan. Drip Season 3 made it to No. 55 on the US Billboard 200 Albums chart, as well as No. 25 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Drip Harder: A Collaborative Project with Lil Baby

On October 5, 2018, Gunna once again teamed up with fellow rapper Lil Baby for a collaborative mixtape called Drip Harder. Released via YSL Records, Quality Control Music, Motown, and Capitol Records, the mixtape was one of Gunna’s first major-label releases. Production for the mixtape was handled by Turbo, Frank Dukes, Tay Keith, Taz Taylor, Wheezy, and several others. To get the name for the project, Gunna and Lil Baby fused the titles of their mixtape series, Drip Season and Harder “Drip Too Hard,” the lead single from the mixtape, made it to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Gunna’s biggest hit and his first platinum-certified recording.  “Close Friends,” the second single from the project, made it to No. 28 on the Hot 100.  Critics were fans of Drip Harder, as were fans of Lil Baby and Gunna. Pitchfork gave the duo a positive review on the project, with writer Alphonse Pierre writing, "Lil Baby and Gunna’s chemistry is a refreshing splash in an Atlanta hip-hop scene that has felt stagnant. It’s the duo establishing themselves, knowing they have some limitations, but capitalizing on what they do well. And even if they break up over some pettiness like Rich Gang, Drip Harder will be remembered as a moment that let hip-hop know it had two new superstars."

Drip or Drown 2: Gunna’s Debut Album

Drip or Drown 2, released on February 22, 2019, is  Gunna’s first official release, which he dropped via YSL Records and 300 Entertainment. The album includes guest appearances from frequent collaborators, including Lil Baby, Young Thug, and Playboy Carti. Production on Drip or Drown 2 was handled by Charlie Handsome, Ghetto Guitar, Jet, Keyyz, Morgan Matthews, Tba, and Wheezy.

Gunna’s Recent Releases

Featuring verses from Young Thug, Roddy Ricch, Travis Scott, and Lil Baby, the album became Gunna’s first record to top the charts in the US. In March of 2020, he also put out “Quarantine Clean,” a reference to the Covid-19 pandemic, with Turbo and Young Thug.  Gunna’s most recent release is Slime Language 2, another collaboration between Gunna and Young Thug.
