Jax Jones's Origins

Born Timucin Aluo, Jax Jones was raised in London, England, by his Turkish father (the name Timucin is Turkish), Nigerian stepfather, and Malaysian mother. Growing up in a multi-ethnic household, he was a fan of music from multiple cultures and ethnic backgrounds, primarily listening to hip-hop, afrobeat artists like Fela Kuti, R&B, gospel, and a diverse mix of other genres. He also admired early 2000s production titans like Timbaland, The Neptunes, and Rodney Jerkins.  Jax started making beats when he was 15, using the digital audio workstation Cubase. He'd previously played classical guitar at a young age, but he really found his musical niche when he discovered production. Drawing on a wealth of influences, he honed his craft at London open mic sessions before starting to collaborate with other local musicians as a producer. One of his earliest creative partners was Ripperman, a grime producer based out of Mitcham, London. The two worked together at Raw Materials studio in Brixton, where they collaborated on songs for Big Narstie, Roadside Gs, and other local rappers and MCs. He started working with DJ Duke Dumont in 2014 and began focusing on house music, frequently collaborating with Dumont on tracks like "I Won't Look Back" and "Ocean Drive." During his time in school, Jax would commute for several hours to get from his lectures back to his rented studio in Sydenham.

Jax's Debut Studio Album

Jax rose to fame with the help of the single "I Got U," which became a hit in Germany, Ireland, the UK, and several other parts of the world. After that song became a hit, Jax released "Yeah Yeah Yeah" in July 2015, followed by another single, "House Work," in July 2016.  Jax has shared in interviews that he produced these songs to pay homage to the DIY energy of his early days of making beats on a four-track tape recorder and producing using an old Mac tower. These songs were later featured on his debut album, Snacks (Supersize). Produced by Jax with help from Mark Ralph, Martin Solveig, Steve Mac, Secondcity, Tieks, and Tommy Forest, the album was released via Polydor and Universal Music. Snacks (Supersize) served as the follow-up to the EP Snacks, which was released in 2018. The December 2016 single "You Don't Know Me," featuring Raye, was also included on the tracklist for Snacks (Supersize). That song, along with "I GOT U," is credited with kickstarting Jax's career, and it features a sample from the Booka Shade and M.A.N.D.Y. track "Body Language." Other singles from the record include "Harder" featuring Bebe Rexha and "Play" featuring Years and Years.

Recent Work From Jax Jones

With one album under his belt, Jax went on to collaborate with Martin Solveig, with the two forming the duo Europa. Together, they released "All Day and All Night," a single that features Madison Beer, as well as the song "Tequila," featuring Raye. In late 2020, Jones collaborated with singer Au/Ra on the track "I Miss U," which went Silver in the UK and Gold in Poland. That track was followed by "Feels," a single that was later featured on the Deep Joy EP.  Deep Joy also features the singles "Out Out" with Joel Corry, Charli XCX, and Saweetie. That song became one of Jax's biggest hits yet, peaking at number six on the UK Singles Chart.

What Songs Has Jax Produced and Remixed?

In addition to releasing numerous songs of his own, Jax has also served as a producer and remixer for other musicians in the genres of pop, hip-hop, and EDM. His remix credits include "Say a Prayer" by Tieks, Chaka Khan, and Popcaan, "On My Mind" by Ellie Goulding, "Break My Heart" by Dua Lipa, "Say So" by Doja Cat, and "After the Afterparty" by Charli XCX.
