How Did Måneskin Form?

Three out of four of the members of Måneskin attended high school together in Rome – Damiano, Victoria, and Thomas. Ethan, the group’s drummer, is from Frosinone, a central Italian town not far from Rome. He joined the others after they started actively looking for an official fourth member to handle drums and percussion.  The group’s name was an idea from Victoria de Angelis. De Angelis, who is half-Dutch, was prompted by her fellow bandmates to give them some Danish words that could be potential band names. Victoria came up with “Måneskin,” the Danish word for “Moonlight.”

When Did Måneskin Write Their First Song?

Måneskin started writing original content when they competed in the Pulse Contest, hosted by the Felt Music Club and School in Rome. The group won first prize with an original song after performing in front of a crowd of several hundred people.

Building Momentum as a Band

After their victory at the Pulse Contest, the members of Måneskin started busking on the streets of Rome. After their busking stint, the group traveled to Denmark, where they logged hours of practice time and played more live shows.

Competing on The X Factor

The members of Måneskin became contestants on X Factor Italia in 2017. Coached by Manuel Agnelli, the group won second place on the show and released their debut single, “Chosen,” during the season. “Chosen” was released by Sony Music and is certified 2x Platinum in Italy.  During the band’s time on The X Factor, they performed covers of several modern rock classics, including “Somebody Told Me” by The Killers and “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand.

“Moriro da re” and More Singles

On March 23, 2018, the band released their second single, “Moriro da re (I’ll Die Like a King).” The track went on to be certified 3x Platinum in Italy. It was their first Italian-language release, as their debut single had English lyrics. After “Moriro da re,” the group released “Torna a casa (Come Back Home),” which became their biggest hit yet at the time. The accompanying music video for the track got over 130 million views onYouTube, and the song was certified 5x Platinum in Italy.  Following the success of “Toma a casa,” Måneskin dropped “Fear for Nobody,” a song that was later included on their debut album, Il ballo della vita (The Dance of Life). The song charted in numerous countries throughout Europe, becoming even more commercially successful after the band’s Eurovision win in 2021.

Did Måneskin Win Eurovision 2021?

The band’s biggest achievement so far was taking home first place in the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest with their single “Zitti e buoni (Shut Up and Behave).” The track was co-written and co-produced by the band’s four members, with production assistance coming from Fabrizio Ferraguzzo.  The song gave Italy their first Eurovision win since 1990, and it marked the first time since 2006 that a band had won the contest. After their high-energy performances at the contest, Måneskin got shoutouts from some of the biggest names in rock, including Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos. Following the group’s Eurovision victory, “Zitti e buoni” earned Gold and Platinum certifications in multiple countries throughout Europe. The song was also the first in Måneskin’s discography to chart in the US, landing on the US Hot Hard Rock Songs and World Digital Songs Sales charts.

When Will Måneskin Release New Music?

Since their Eurovision win earlier in 2021, Måneskin has continued releasing new music. Their second full-length studio album, Teatro d’ira: Vol. 1, came out on March 19, 2021, and features the hit single “I Wanna Be Your Slave.” The record earned favorable reviews from Rolling Stone Italia and several other major outlets, with critics comparing Måneskin’s sound to that of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, and The Arctic Monkeys.  The band’s most recent release is “Mammamia,” a single that dropped on October 8, 2021. Released via Sony Music, the song made it to number 67 on the Billboard Global 200, and its accompanying music video came out on October 19.
