Rauw Alejandro’s Early Life

Born in San Juan, Raul grew up between Canovanas and Carolina in Puerto Rico. Both of his parents are musicians – his father is guitarist Raul Ocasio, and his mother is backup singer Maria Nelly Ruiz. Thanks to his musical background and the talents of his parents, Raul was introduced to a wide array of sounds and styles from a young age. His mother and father showed him the music of American artists like Elvis, Michael Jackson, and Chris Brown, all of whom played a role in Raul becoming inspired to pursue a music career himself.  Raul’s parents are separated, and he moved as a teenager to the United States, where he lived with his father. The two spent time in Miami and New York City, where Raul was exposed to more genres, including R&B and dancehall.

Rauw Alejandro’s Second Love Is Soccer

In addition to growing up with a passion for music, Raul was a talented footballer from a young age. He played association football throughout his childhood and teen years, but his career prospects were hindered by an injury that he sustained at 20 years old.  To add to his impressive list of talents, Raul has also been a gifted dancer since he was a kid. His background in dance helped him to develop a love for dancehall music, a genre that was later infused into his unique sound and style.

Getting Into Music

After an injury took away his dreams of playing professional football, Raul ended up dealing with some depression. He knew he had to find something else to do with his time, so he channeled his energy towards a new creative outlet – music. In 2014, Raul started uploading original songs to SoundCloud and quickly gained a following on the platform. His debut mixtape, Punto de Equilibrio, dropped in November of 2016, and he was signed to Duars Entertainment just a few months later. In 2018, Sony Music Latin made Rauw Alejandro a part of their roster as part of the Los Proximos talent scouting project. Later that year, he collaborated with Kevin Roldan and Khea on the song “Pa’ Tu Casa,” which was his first major feature. Not long after, he was featured on “Luz Apaga,” a track with Ozuna, Lunay, and Lyanno.

What Was Rauw Alejandro’s First Song?

After getting signed to Sony Music Latin, Rauw Alejandro released his debut single, “Toda,” in December 2017. The song features Alex Rose, and it went 6x Platinum in the US according to the Latin certification scale. The song was later remixed to feature Cazzu, Lenny Tavarez, and Lyanno. It rose to number 29 on the US Latin charts, number 12 on the Argentinian charts, and number 45 on the Spanish Charts.

Collaborations With High-Profile Latin Artists

Throughout 2019, Rauw Alejandro’s career continued gaining traction. He collaborated with renowned reggaeton singer Nicky Jam on his second single, “Que Le De,” which charted in several countries and earned multiple Platinum certifications.  That year, he also worked with Farruko on “Fantasias,” another hit, which was later remixed to feature Anuel AA, Natti Natascha, and Lunay.

Rauw Alejandro’s Debut Album

Rauw’s first full-length studio release was Afrodisiaco, which dropped on November 13, 2020. The album features production work from Rosalia, Sky Rompiendo, Nesty, The Martinez Brothers, and more. Guest appearances abound on the tracklist, including features from Anuel AA, J Balvin, Wisin & Yandel, Zion & Lennox, Arcangel, Sech, and more. The album made it to number 75 on the charts in the US, no small feat for the first record from a Latin artist.
