Becoming Skrillex

On January 15, 1988, Sonny John Moore was born in Los Angeles, California. Growing up around East and South LA, Sonny went to his fair share of punk shows and became a frequent flier in the local hardcore music scene.  In 2004, Sonny Joined the hardcore-emo band From First To Last, long before he started performing under the name Skrillex. Sonny played guitar and keyboards with the band from 2004 to 2007, all the while serving as the lead vocalist.  Eventually, Sonny created a MySpace page in his own name, hinting at a desire to pursue a solo career. Not long after, he announced that he was leaving From First to Last to make his own music. In 2009, Sonny released The Gypsyhook EP under his own name via his own label, Owsla. The collection of songs marked the beginning of Sonny’s solo career, but he still wasn’t Skrillex yet.

Skrillex’s Debut EP

It wasn’t until 2010 that the first Skrillex EP, My Name is Skrillex, came out. The EP marked the earliest use of some of Skrillex’s signature production elements – growling bass, aggressive synths, and punchy snares. Some of the sounds of the EP are also reminiscent of Sonny’s early influences, including the renowned artist and producer Aphex Twin.

Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites and Mainstream Success

On October 22, 2010, Skrillex released his second EP, Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, via Big Beat Records and mau5trap. The latter is the label of renowned EDM artist Deadmau5, who helped Skrillex make a name for himself in the electronic music scene. The EP features two singles: “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” and “Rock n’ Roll (Will Take You to the Mountain).”  The sonic makeup of the EP is the result of collaboration with some of the biggest producers in EDM, including Zedd, Foreign Beggars, and Bare Noize. On June 7 of the next year, Skrillex released the third in his string of EPs – More Monsters and Sprites. The EP features “First of the Year (Equinox),” a song that took home several awards for its music video.

Bangarang and More

After More Monsters and Sprites came Bangarang, an EP that takes its name from its most popular single. The title track of the EP features the American rapper Sirah and took home the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.

Remixes, Soundtracks, and More

In 2011, Skrillex released a remix of “Cinema,” a hit track by Benny Benassi. His remix became even more successful than the original. A year later, he composed the song “Big Hunt,” which was featured in the animated film Wreck-It Ralph. Also in 2012, Skrillex wrote his first film score alongside Cliff Martinez for the movie Spring Breakers. Skrillex has also contributed music to several other pieces of media, including the video game Far Cry 3, as well as another game, Syndicate. In 2013, Skrillex took home a Grammy for Best Remixed Recording thanks to his work with Nero on “Promises.”

Did Skrillex Date Ellie Goulding?

After Skrillex released “Summit,” a collaboration with British pop icon Ellie Goulding, Rolling Stone magazine reported that Goulding and Skrillex were dating. However, the couple didn’t stay together for long, allegedly because of the ocean between them.

Dog Blood: Skrillex and Boys Noize Unite

On August 12, 2010, Skrillex and Boys Noize released a two-track single as Dog Blood. The song “Next Order” from the project made it to the top of the Techno chart on Beatport.

Skrillex’s Debut Album

After a string of numerous successful EPs, Skrillex finally put out his debut studio album, Recess, in March 2014. The electronica album features the singles “Try It Out,” “Recess,” “Ragga Bomb,” and “Dirty Vibe.”

Jack U

In February 2015, Skrillex dropped his first collaborative record with Diplo, Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack U. The album features guest vocals from the likes of Justin Bieber, Missy Elliot, Kiesza, AlunaGeorge, and even 2 Chainz.  Jack U took home multiple Grammys at the music awards’ 58th annual ceremony, including Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording for the single “Where Are U Now.”

Recent Work

In 2017, Skrillex collaborated with Habstrakt on the track “Chicken Soup,” as well as tracks by several other artists. He’s recently worked on songs with J Balvin, Justin Bieber, Don Toliver, Swae Lee, and others.
