How Tainy Got Started in Music

Marco Masis was 15 years old when he first started learning how to make beats using FL Studio XXL. He got his copy of that piece of production software on loan from his friend Nely “El Arma Secreta,” who challenged Marco to make him a song for Luny Tunes. Luny liked the track that Marco produced, and it ended up on one of his albums.  Tainy and Luny ended up co-producing Mas Flow: Los Benjamins, a collaborative reggaeton release that came out on September 26, 2006. The album also features production work by Nely, DJ Nelson, Noriega, and several other big names in reggaeton. Marco was only 17 at the time of the album’s release.

Tainy Taking Off

After the success of his collaborations with Luny Tunes, Tainy served as a producer for several stars in multiple genres. His production credits from the 2000s include songs by Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton, and others.  For the majority of his career, Tainy has worked as a producer. While his earliest work was primarily in the reggaeton genre, he branched out throughout the 2000s to produce for Latino artists with a wide array of sounds. He’s worked with De La Ghetto, Arcangel, Plan B, Yandel, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Anuel AA, Ozuna, and more, and his work has earned him multiple Latin Grammy nominations and wins.

Tainy’s Work in the 2010s and 2020s

Tainy first made a name for himself in the early 2000s, but he’s stayed active for nearly a decade since. In the late 2010s, he started releasing music in his own name, nearly always in collaboration with big names in numerous genres.

2019

Marco’s debut single as a lead artist was “I Can’t Get Enough,” a collaboration with Benny Blanco, Selena Gomez, and J Balvin. That track made it to number 66 on the US charts, and it was certified Gold in the United States and Platinum in Mexico. Later in 2019, Tainy worked with Mozart La Para on “Barbaro” and earned several more Platinum certifications for his collaborations with Anuel AA, Azuna, and Bad Bunny. “Callaíta” featuring Bad Bunny was certified 4x Platinum in Spain and reached number 52 on the US charts. “Adicto” with Anuel AA and Ozuna was another International success, earning Platinum certifications in multiple countries and reaching number 5 on the US Latin charts.

2020

Tainy was as prolific as ever throughout 2020, working on several more smash-hit songs. That year, he also started his own company called NEON16. In partnership with Interscope Records, the company is what Tainy describes as a “multifaceted talent incubator.” It serves as a part-label, part production company for Latin artists. Tainy created NEON16 in partnership with Lex Borrero, who described the company’s mantra as “Fear nothing, impact everything.”  Many of Tainy’s releases in 2020 were songs that he produced for artists on the NEON16 roster. These songs include tracks by Justin Quiles, Lennox and Llane, Kris Floyd, and others. One of Marco’s biggest hits from 2020 was “Un Dia,” a song that he produced for J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Dua Lipa. The track was named one of the best songs of 2020 by Billboard, Rolling Stone, and several other outlets, and it earned a 15x Platinum certification from the RIAA according to the Latin certification scale.

2021

This year, Tainy has worked on some of his most successful releases. He collaborated with Shawn Mendes on the track “Summer of Love,” which made it to number 48 on the Hot 100 in the US. He’s also worked on songs by Saint Jhn, Rauw Alejandro, Yandel, Bad Bunny, and more this year, and he’s set to put out more work in the months to come.

Tainy’s Awards

Tainy has won Latin Grammys for Best Urban Song and Best Urban Music Album, and he’s received nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best Engineered Album. In 2019, he won a Spotify Award for Summer Song thanks to his work with Bad Bunny on “Callaíta.”
