Early Forays Into Acting

Growing up, Willow went to school at Sierra Canyon School in Los Angeles, California, her hometown.  While some artists start their careers at a slow pace, Willow jumped right in with the help of her parents. By the time she was just seven years old, she had made her acting debut in I Am Legend, a sci-fi horror film that starred her father, Will. At eight, she played a supporting role in Kit Kittredge: An American Girl and voiced a young Gloria the hippo in the sequel to Madagascar More recently, Willow has played roles on Adventure Time and Neo Yokio and appeared alongside her mother on Red Table Talk.

Willow’s First Single

In 2009, Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow’s mother, appeared as a guest on the talk show Lopez Tonight. During her interview, Jada shared with the audience that her daughter was getting started with her music career. Not long after this announcement, Willow released “Whip My Hair,” her debut single. Produced by Ronald Jackson and written by Jackson and Jane Ratliff, the dance-pop track was released on October 26, 2010, via Roc Nation Records. Thanks to the viral success of the song, Willow made it to No. 11 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 at just nine years old. The song later went Platinum in the US and Australia, and it also performed well in Europe, going Gold in the UK. “Whip My Hair” received positive feedback from critics, with Matt Donnely of the Los Angeles Times describing the track as introducing “a pre-teen firecracker who lives up to her impeccable breeding and perhaps takes the legacy one step further.”  After the song’s release, Willow appeared on several of the biggest talk shows in the US, giving an especially appealing performance on The Ellen Degeneres Show. On December 31, 2010, she performed “Whip My Hair” on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. She went on to perform the song on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2011, as well as at the Kids Choice Awards. The New York Times described the official video for “Whip My Hair” as depicting Willow as “A Jackson Pollock with hair extensions, flinging paint around a white room using nothing more than what’s atop her head.”

Making a Name for Herself in Music

As she grew and matured as an artist, Willow started to gain more attention for her lyricism and vocal abilities. Shortly after the 2016 election of Donald Trump as US president, she released the track “November 9th,” a song that she used to process her feelings about the new president. The track’s lyrics are raw and vulnerable: “Baby girl, I know you're tired Don't let the world put out your fire Take my hand and you will see Sadness and anger aren't everything”

Touring

In 2014, Willow went on tour in support of Jhene Aiko. In an interview with Billboard, the two artists discussed their mutual love of magic and astrology, as well as Willow’s maturing as an artist.  In the interview, Willow said, “Coming out of the “Whip My Hair” days, that was the first time I’d ever toured with artists I listen to [in addition to Aiko, Syd and SZA]. I’d started playing guitar, and that tour really solidified: “OK, I want to be a live musician, to have a music career, for real.”

Willow’s Most Recent Album

On July 16, 2021, Willow released Lately I Feel Everything via Roc Nation Records, MSFTS, and Polydor. Produced by Willow and Tyler Cole, the album features the singles “Transparent Soul” and “Lipstick.” Lately I Feel Everything made it to No. 46 on the US Billboard 200 and No. 5 on the US Top Alternative Albums charts.  The album features guest appearances from the likes of Cherry Glazerr, Avril Lavigne, Travis Barker, Tierra Whack, and Ayla Tesler-Mabe. The tracks on the record have been described as a mix of indie-rock, alternative rock, emo, pop, and alternative. Lately I Feel Everything received positive reviews from numerous outlets, including Allmusic, Clash, Exclaim, and The Line of Best Fit, with the latter describing the record as “a healthy dose of adrenaline and emo energy.”
